About Our Program

The Bilingual Inclusive Education (BIE) Residency Program, an unprecedented teacher preparation program, will launch in May 2025. The BIE Residency is an outgrowth of the BPS Teacher Pipelines’ flagship program, the Bilingual Educator & Accelerated Community to Teacher (BE/ACTT) Program. The BIE Residency will cultivate BPS bilingual paraeducators and career changers to become permanent BPS teachers of record with a Bilingual Education Endorsement and a Masters in Inclusive Education from Stonehill College.

The teacher residency model was originally designed to mirror the medical education practice of residents working in hospitals alongside doctors. Specifically, teaching residents spend a full school year working in one classroom, learning “at the elbow” of veteran, licensed teachers. Teacher residencies have shown great promise in the cultivating and sustaining of quality educators due to high quality instruction and on the job training in real classroom settings.

Our Mission & Goals

In alignment with the overarching mission of the BPS Teacher Pipeline Programs, the BIE Residency Program’s mission is to support racially, linguistically and culturally diverse teachers by providing a coherent and comprehensive pathway from paraeducator/ career-changer to professional teacher. Keeping students at the center of our work, we aim to cultivate teachers who empower young people to be change agents for the city’s communities. This is work we know can happen in classrooms where teachers are committed, responsive, and reflective of the students and their various cultures, heritages, backgrounds and languages. To advance our mission, the Bilingual Inclusive Education Residency Program has three goals:

  1. Develop and sustain an affordable pathway to an advanced degree for BPS teachers of color.

  2. Increase the number of BPS teachers who reflect the linguistic, racial and ethnic diversity of Boston’s students through an accessible pathway and supportive programming.

  3. Improve the ability and agency of BPS teachers to teach bilingual special education and to center race and racism through culturally affirming pedagogy and practices.
